On Saturday, March 2, Cal Western put another great Barrister’s Ball in the books. With 500 guests, this year’s event turned out to be one of one of the largest balls in the school’s history. After this year’s event was announced, the Barrister’s Ball committee received mixed feedback about having the event on a boat, but after the event, it is safe to say that most people enjoyed their evening—despite the stubborn rain and wind!
Barrister’s Ball 2019 was held on one of the Hornblower yachts, Inspiration, which is a three-level ship that can safely hold up to 1,200 people. The ball consisted of a seated three-course dinner, live DJ music, casino tables, a photo booth, and a lot of dancing and fun!

During dinner, the Barrister’s Ball Committee announced the annual faculty awards, which are nominated and voted for by the students. Professor of the Year 2019 was awarded to Prof. Pooja Dadhania, who teaches Civil Procedures I and II, the Clinical Externship Seminar, and Immigration/Asylum and Refugee Law.

Prof. Barbara Gross, who teaches Securities and Bankruptcy Law, was honored as Adjunct Professor of the Year 2019. The distinction of Legal Writing Professor of the Year 2019 was awarded to Prof. Roberta Thyfault, who unfortunately was unable to attend the award ceremony due to a scheduling conflict with the Jessup international Moot Court competition. The Commentary interviewed her about her accomplishment.
Overall, the attendees, including students, faculty members, and deans, made this year’s ball a very memorable night. To continue planning and executing another great Barrister’s Ball, the committee appreciates all feedback. If you attended Barrister’s this year, please take this short survey to help the Barrister’s Ball Committee plan another great event next year.
It was an honor and a lot of fun to organize this year’s event.
