CWSL, TJ join forces to teach women self-defense tactics

WLC 2The statistics of assault against women are staggering. Young women especially are disproportionately the victims of violence and sexual assault. Every 98 seconds an American woman is sexually assaulted, so women globally are speaking out against victimization in hopes of changing this reality.  On Nov. 1, California Western’s Women’s Law Caucus and Thomas Jefferson School of Law’s Women’s Law Association teamed to host a self-defense seminar at Cal Western, perfectly timed to be a link between female-empowering words and action.

With classes over on this Wednesday evening, it was tempting to go home or continue work on any number of dreaded outlines. But for a dozen women from Cal Western and Thomas Jefferson, they instead chose to learn defense techniques that could possibly save them from becoming a statistic. 'FEAST FROM THE EAST' RAISES MONEY FOR REFUGEES -- November 14 --

By Sara Gold, Editor-in-Chief

The South Asian Law Student Association (SALSA) and Middle Eastern Law Student Association (MELSA) hosted a “Feast from the East” during lunch on Tuesday, Nov. 14 to raise money for Middle Eastern refugees.

Students and faculty piled Middle Eastern cuisine (including hummus, pita, and salad) as well as Indian favorites (including naan and paneer tikka masala) onto their plates in the 350 building first-floor lobby. The two clubs raised nearly $300 to benefit YALLA, a San Diego-based non-profit that benefits refugees in San Diego County. According to the organization’s website, San Diego County faces a “refugee crisis,” especially in El Cajon. Continue reading “Events recap: charity feast, health law mixer, IP panel”

California Western’s New Media Rights clinic celebrated its tenth anniversary Saturday, Oct. 7 with festivities attended by about 100 people at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. This milestone evening kicked off with entry for all to the park’s Game Masters Exhibit. After some interactive gaming fun, guests were welcomed to indulge in “street” tacos, churros, and beverages. Later in the evening, current and former clinic staff, as well as current and former Cal Western student interns, spoke briefly about the impact New Media Rights had on their lives.

“My fellowship at New Media Rights was an incredible thing for my career. I learned so much that I use every single day,” said Teri Karobonik, former staff attorney at New Media Rights and now an attorney for Twitter. “The earlier we can expose creators and future entrepreneurs to these issues, the better. Working at New Media Rights made me the attorney I am today.”

Following the brief speeches, a short video of some former interns sending their congratulations was played as a surprise to Prof. Art Neill, the clinic’s founder and executive director. Prof. Neill, who teaches the Internet and Social Media Law class at Cal Western, concluded the evening with a musical performance.

Wrongful Conviction Day 2017 Panel: “Wrongful Convictions, the Death Penalty, and Reforming the Justice System in California”

Story and photos by Tom McMullen

More than 20 years ago, Alan Giminez was found guilty of murder for the death of his newborn daughter. Less than two years ago, Luis Vargas was sitting in a prison cell inside one of America’s most dangerous maximum-security prisons, having been found guilty on three counts of rape. For their convictions, both men received life sentences. On Oct. 2, both men sat before a rapt audience in a lecture hall at California Western as free and innocent men.

The panel, hosted by San Diego Union-Tribune writer Greg Moran, was one of several events hosted by the Innocence Network as part of Wrongful Conviction Day, an annual day dedicated to raising awareness of the various issues, causes, and remedies involved in wrongful convictions. Alongside California Innocence Project (CIP) director and co-founder Justin Brooks, who spearheaded the legal efforts to exonerate them, Mr. Giminez and Mr. Vargas answered questions and spoke candidly about the years they spent fighting for the liberty that was taken from them, as well as the struggles they are still forced to endure as a result.
